CARE Deutschland-Luxemburg e.V.: New Name, New Challenges

As of 1 November 2007, CARE International Deutschland is called CARE Deutschland-Luxemburg (CARE DL). This change of name was unanimously adopted by the general meeting and it stands for a change and marks a new stage in the history of the international relief organization. Apart from its Berlin office, CARE DL will maintain another office in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg.

For CARE DL the inclusion of Luxembourg into the CARE family means an important expansion of its potential of actions. Heribert Scharrenbroich, the chairman of the board, says that by this step CARE can get more support for its work in the developing countries without a significant increase in administrative costs. “This is an interesting cooperation within Europe making optimum use of donations and public subsidies”, says Scharrenbroich.

The expansion to Luxembourg is also reflected in the board’s new composition: The trade unionist Robert Schadeck from Luxembourg was elected further chairman deputy as member of the managing board, and the former governor of the Luxembourg Lions, Jean-Paul Juncker, was elected member of the advisory committee.

As regards its content, the orientation will remain the same.

CARE Deutschland-Luxemburg will continue intensifying its worldwide emergency and disaster relief work. Within the framework of reducing poverty, we want to increasingly support girls and women as the moving forces in development. Likewise, the (educational) policy work as advocate of the underprivileged and minorities will remain an important element of our efforts. Since 2004, Rita Süssmuth has accompanied our work as patroness.

For all the new momentum, more than 60 years after the war CARE still reminds us of its roots: The transatlantic partnership and the CARE parcel as a symbol of humanitarian relief have been revived time and again in our campaigns.
